Description
The study area, the Nyae Nyae Conservancy, is located in the Kalahari Desert, in north-eastern Namibia near the eastern border with Botswana. Due to the seasonal rainfall, the vegetation here is manageable. Larger trees occur where there is sufficient water in the soil. The landscape is characterised by bush and grass vegetation. It is open, well contoured, particularly wildlife-rich, only partially inhabited, has a number of permanent waterholes, seasonally filled "pans" and is partly made fertile by fire management. Due to its very active, exceptional wildlife, this region has been designated a Conservancy, an area for the conservation and protection of natural resources. Daily patrols and annual wildlife counts contribute greatly to the management of this area. The Nyae Nyae Development Foundation supports the Conservancy and the Community Forest in this.
